Rescue mourns lab beagle killed in suspected alligator attack, announces safety measures

LOXAHATCHEE, Fla. (CBS12) — Big Dog Ranch Rescue is mourning the loss of Omelette, a former laboratory beagle believed to have been killed in an alligator attack, marking a devastating turn in one of the largest dog rescue efforts in the country.

The organization announced on Wednesday that Omelette, who had recently been adopted into a South Florida home, escaped through a fence Sunday evening in Boynton Beach. Staff were notified around 6 p.m. and quickly launched a widespread search, posting alerts across social media, Nextdoor, and missing pet platforms while dispatching a team to comb the area.

After two days of searching, Omelette was tragically found on Tuesday morning in a nearby canal. Based on the circumstances, the rescue believes the dog likely fell victim to an alligator.
