Should Staten Island control school calls in extreme weather? New proposal says yes

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island residents remember the February blizzard that blasted the borough with about 2 feet of snow.

Cars were buried, public transportation was crippled and some roads downright hazardous to travel on. Despite this, Mayor Zohran Mamdani made the decision to reopen schools for in-person learning across New York City the day after snow stopped falling. The decision drew the ire of Staten Island residents and elected officials alike, who argued the borough got hit harder by the storm than the rest of the city.

Now, one of those representatives has introduced a resolution that would ensure something like that never happens again…
