Man arrested in attempted scam targeting elderly resident

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) — A 27-year-old resident of Brooklyn, NY, was arrested by the Fairfield Police Department on Tuesday, in connection with an attempted scam aimed at defrauding an elderly individual.

Bin Sun is charged with criminal attempt at larceny first-degree.

The investigation unfolded after an elderly resident reported receiving an email purportedly from “Geek Squad,” falsely alleging a $525 purchase. Believing the email to be legitimate, the victim contacted the provided phone number, where they spoke with an individual claiming to be a member of the Geek Squad.

Under the guise of resolving the alleged charge, the victim shared their bank account information and granted remote access to their computer, anticipating a refund.

Sun, posing as a Geek Squad representative, duped the victim into believing that a fabricated refund of $25,000 had been incorrectly processed. Subsequently, the victim was coerced into withdrawing $20,000 in cash from their bank, with plans to collect an additional $5,000 the following day. Sun assured the victim that a representative would visit their residence to collect the initial $20,000.
