An Essex County family is suing Mountainside Medical Center for $40 million, arguing medical negligence caused the death of a beloved East Orange civil servant.
The case stems from the 2024 death of Phyllis L. Burrell, who died less than three hours after what was supposed to be a routine diagnostic procedure, according to a lawsuit filed in Essex County Superior Court.
The suit claims Burrell went to the hospital in Montclair on April 8, 2024 complaining of generalized weakness and other symptoms. She was admitted and found to be in multi-organ failure. Four days later, Burrell underwent a liver biopsy meant to help diagnose the cause of her illness…
