Marion man faces up to 25 years in vehicular homicide of 13-year-old girl

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Marion man faces another 25 years for vehicular homicide after a 13-year-old Coggon girl died in 2024 from injuries she suffered in a car crash he unintentionally caused in 2013.

The trial for Brandon Schaul, 38, was set to start Tuesday, but he instead pleaded as charged to homicide by vehicle-OWI, a Class B felony.

He was first convicted by a jury in 2015 for homicide by vehicle — OWI, a Class B felony, after he crossed the center line in his pickup truck and struck a van, driven by Rachel Denney, 27, of Coggon, on May 18, 2013, near Highway 13 and Valley Farm Road, near Central City.
