National Prayer Day: We need it

Today is National Prayer Day, which matters because it does something increasingly rare in modern life: it calls an entire nation to pause at the same moment, for the same purpose. In a culture that moves at highway speed, this day is more like a red light at a quiet intersection in Russell County, Lee County, and all over Alabama – anywhere in our vast nation, asking everyone to stop to look inward and consider something bigger than themselves.

The importance of National Prayer Day is rooted in history as much as in faith. The tradition stretches back to the earliest days of the country, when leaders called for collective prayer during times of uncertainty. It seems we are in uncertain times now, doesn’t it?
