ALBANY — An Illinois man says he was kicked out of the Capital City Rescue Mission after he presented a petition for better living conditions at the South Pearl Street shelter.
Devon Reid, 33, a former city council member from Evanston, has been walking eastward since March to raise awareness about economic issues, often chronicling his journey online. While he has raised money for the trek, he said it’s not always enough, meaning his stops are sometimes camping outside or in homeless shelters rather than hotels. Reid had been staying at the Rescue Mission since last Sunday, and said he noticed residents needed better support there.
“I believe in the housing first model. I believe what they’re doing is good work,” he said. “But I think when you just stop at the housing first, you’re doing just as much of a disservice.”…
