‘We had to be here’: Fans celebrate Costco’s long-awaited arrival in Capital Region

GUILDERLAND — After nearly a decade of anticipation, the Capital Region’s first Costco has arrived.

The members-only wholesale store, which has 146 million cardholders worldwide, was first reported to be considering a location in the area in 2013. Its opening on Thursday follows years of speculation by shoppers, planning delays, legal battles with neighboring homeowners and the strategic purchase of nearby property by Pyramid Management Group, which owns Crossgates Mall and developed the Costco parcel.

Costco fans traveled from around the region to peruse the new location. Though doors opened early at 8 a.m., some of the first shoppers in line had camped out since the early hours of the morning. Damaris Williams and two friends got in line at 3:20 a.m…
