Iowa’s tax-free weekend returns, offering savings on back-to-school clothing and more

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA — Iowans can save on some back-to-school and seasonal purchases as the state’s annual sales tax holiday gets underway Friday.

Businesses open Aug. 7 and 8 are required to waive state and local option sales taxes on qualifying clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less per item, according to the Iowa Department of Revenue.

The department defines qualifying clothing as apparel and typical footwear intended to be worn on the body. Jewelry, sporting equipment and several other types of accessories do not qualify…
