Union College director, county legislator becomes Schenectady public safety commissioner

SCHENECTADY — A Union College campus security administrator and retired Niskayuna detective sergeant with ties to Schenectady County politics is the city’s new public safety commissioner.

Thomas P. Constantine began the part-time police and fire department oversight job earlier this week, said Mayor Gary McCarthy, who appointed him to the post. McCarthy said the part-time post will pay Constantine about $48,000 a year. He’s set to be ceremonially sworn in on Thursday.
