California man charged with DWI, weapons possession on Thruway in East Chatham

EAST CHATHAM, NY (WRGB) — A California man faces both DWI and weapons charges after State Police investigated a vehicle they found off the shoulder of the Thruway.

On August 12, 2026, troopers assigned to State Police Troop T, SP Albany and Troop K Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested Lorne Christopher Thayer, 59, of LaHonda, CA, on felony weapons charges and driving while intoxicated.

At approximately 11:00 p.m. on August 12, troopers from SP Albany observed a 2017 Ram truck parked in a grass field off the right shoulder of the New York State Thruway (I-90) westbound in the town of East Chatham. During an interview with the operator, identified as Thayer, troopers observed signs of alcohol impairment and issued standard field sobriety tests, which Thayer failed.
