ALBANY, N.Y. (WNYT) – Albany’s first midyear budget update says the city faces a growing fiscal gap and is seeking an independent state review.
Mayor Applyrs said Saturday, Aug. 15 that the administration sent Albany’s first-ever midyear budget report to the Common Council and posted it on the Budget Office’s webpage. The report says the city now projects an approximately $22 million gap for 2026 and a preliminary $33 million gap for 2027 based on revenues and spending through June 30.
The release says employee health insurance costs are now projected at approximately $40 million, with overtime above adopted budget levels, increased debt-service obligations and unrealized revenue also driving the 2026 gap.
