The City Council on Friday released a new plan to build more than 5,000 apartments on Staten Island’s North Shore — with an eye toward the borough’s closest neighbor, New Jersey.
Councilmember Kamillah Hanks, a Staten Island Democrat, told Gothamist she hoped to emulate the kind of housing development that helped turn moribund, post-industrial waterfronts of Jersey City, Hoboken and Bayonne into denser residential communities.
