Portland State University researcher investigates ‘slightly explosive’ glowing pickles

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — What makes a pickle glow? A Portland State University professor is investigating.

If a pickle is mounted on two metal forks and plugged into a socket, one end will glow. However, the physics behind the glow has been a mystery, PSU explained.

Josh Méndez, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at PSU, recently learned that the mysterious glow stemmed from an unsolved electrostatics problem.
