Arkansas History Today: State adopts 13th Amendment

On April 13, 1864, Confederate forces struck the Union advance in the Action at Moscow near present-day Prescott, a fight tied directly to Nevada County and to the wider drive toward Camden in Ouachita County during the Camden Expedition.

In 1865, the Arkansas Senate voted unanimously to ratify the Thirteenth Amendment, putting the state among the earlier former Confederate states to move formally against slavery. That vote came just days after news of Lee’s surrender reached Arkansas and one day before the House followed suit…
