New Army aircraft named in honor of tribe that once called Kansas home

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A new military aircraft that’s being partially built at Bell Textron in Wichita is being named in honor a Native American people that lived in Kansas and across the Great Plains.

On Wednesday, Textron announced that the long-range assault aircraft has been designated the MV-75 Cheyenne II. The U.S. Army has a tradition of naming its aircraft after the Native American tribes.

The Cheyenne lived in the Great Lakes and Great Plains regions for 400 years before being forced onto reservations in Montana and Oklahoma.
