PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The threat of thunderstorms returns to the greater Portland-Vancouver metro area later this week.
A low-pressure system diving south is expected to impact Oregon’s weather pattern Wednesday and Thursday. The thunderstorm threat first arrives over the Cascades and much of eastern Oregon as early as Wednesday. Lightning, thunder, and a few heavy downpours aren’t expected in Portland until Thursday morning.
Rain is much needed across the Pacific Northwest as over 80% of the state is under some form of drought. A few hundredths of an inch of rain is possible from Wednesday to Thursday.

The forecasted rainfall totals are welcome, but will not lower the threat of wildfire activity. Abundant lightning and gusty winds with little rain elevate the threat of new wildfires starting and spreading rapidly.
