Rain, thunderstorms expected late Tuesday into Wednesday morning

ST. LOUIS – A weather system will slide into the St. Louis region late Tuesday and bring an extensive area of rain and thunderstorms with it.

The storms will be strongest where they initiate — near the Kansas-Missouri state line this evening. They’ll slide east and southeast into our region after midnight. By the time the storms reach the FOX 2 viewing area, the storms will have the potential to generate some wind gusts between 40 and 50 miles per hour, lots of lightning, and heavy rain.

Most spots will get at least a half inch of rain. However, a narrow corridor — roughly the width of a single county — will see enhanced rainfall totals of one to three inches, which could be enough to generate some nuisance flooding for a short time late tonight. That enhanced band of rain should run from central into southeastern Missouri and may graze metro St. Louis.

The heaviest rain is likely to spread across the viewing area from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Wednesday, with the most active period in metro St. Louis between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. The early morning rain and storms will gradually thin out and turn into scattered showers…
