Oregon high school track and field bests: Another week, another state record

Newberg senior Sophia Castaneda spent her first two years in high school chasing Lake Oswego’s Josie Donelson as Donelson eventually broke Maria Mutola’s 33-year-old state record in the 400 meters and became the first Oregon girl to break 53 seconds in winning the 6A title in 2024.

“I was kind of in awe of her, being an underclassman and just seeing her kill it out there,” Castaneda said.
