SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Intermountain Health neurologists are celebrating a major surgical milestone: the 100th use of an implantable device that reduces seizure activity in patients with focal epilepsy.
Responsive neurostimulation (RNS) uses electrodes placed on the brain surface or in deeper brain areas for continuous monitoring of brain waves. When the device detects abnormal activity, it sends an impulse that stops it from spreading throughout the brain and becoming a seizure.
Some studies have shown that this device has reduced seizures in patients by 82%. Intermountain Health doctors are already seeing life-changing results for patients with epilepsy, most of whom didn`t respond to other treatments in the past…
