Man charged with hate crime for damaging church statue on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Authorities allege that a 31-year-old man committed a hate crime when he threw and damaged a small statue outside a Roman Catholic church in Bulls Head.

Rudolph Severino, 31, of David Place in Elm Park, was arrested four days after the incident occurred on April 20 at about 2 a.m. at Our Lady of Pity R.C. Church at 1616 Richmond Ave. near Victory Boulevard, according to the criminal complaint based on an investigation by the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force.

The statue was one of two identical figurines depicting Mary holding the infant Jesus Christ, surrounded by angels. The statues were attached to the exterior walls on both sides of the main doors to the church…
