PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — When a man who drove an explosives-filled vehicle into one of Portland’s most storied athletic clubs this weekend, one thing was immediately clear: there had been signs.
Court filings obtained by KOIN 6 News show that the man, 49-year-old Bruce Valentine Whitman, had long struggled with mental health and had received inpatient treatment as recently as February.
Whitman drove a vehicle full of explosives into the Multnomah Athletic Club early Saturday morning, killing himself and setting fire to the building. Whitman previously worked as a bartender at the club, known as the MAC.
