The Quiet Island Where Maryland Started
About half a mile off Colton’s Point in St. Mary’s County, a 40-acre island sits alone in the Potomac River. There’s no road in and no bridge out.
You reach it only by private boat or a seasonal water taxi, and that’s exactly what keeps it so quiet.
Step off the dock and you find open grass, wide sky, and river views in every direction, plus a story that starts back in 1634, before Maryland was even a colony.
