A man was shot in the head Sunday afternoon on the 1300 block of West 73rd Place in Englewood and later died at the hospital, according to Chicago police. The shooting happened at about 4:19 p.m., and the victim was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His identity and age have not been released.
Area detectives are investigating the shooting, but as of Sunday, police said no updates were available, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. No information on a suspect or motive has been made public. The block falls within the Chicago Police Department’s 7th (Englewood) District, which is based at 1438 West 63rd Street and patrols both Englewood and West Englewood.
A Block With A Painful History
Sunday’s homicide adds to a troubling pattern on this stretch of West 73rd Place and the surrounding blocks. Just a day earlier, an argument in Englewood turned deadly, leaving one man dead and two others wounded. In May, a 27-year-old man standing on the sidewalk in the nearby 1200 block of West 73rd Place was shot in the lower back and leg during a drive-by attack and taken to the same University of Chicago Medical Center.
The violence on this corridor goes back years. In October 2022, a 32-year-old man was found shot to death around 3:51 a.m. in the 1300 block of West 73rd Street, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to FOX 32 Chicago. In February 2022, the same outlet reported that police responded to a violent disturbance on the block where a burning object was thrown through a residence window before shots were fired at the home.
