Man who jumped in river to avoid deputies now in custody

A man wanted on multiple failure-to-appear warrants was arrested after deputies say he fled from them twice and eventually jumped into the French Broad River.

Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies attempted to take Travelle Shade into custody shortly before 9 a.m. Aug. 4 near the intersection of Deaverview Road and Candler Knob Road. Shade fled in a vehicle, leading deputies on a pursuit before escaping on foot.

Later that afternoon, deputies spotted Shade riding a bicycle on Deaverview Road. He fled again, eventually reaching the area of Carrier Park, where he jumped into the French Broad River…
