Modesto firefighter Zion Maghoney was standing waist-deep in the clear water of Eagle Lake when one swimmer caught his attention.
Most people in the alpine lake near Lake Tahoe were swimming leisurely, often in groups. This man was alone, hundreds of feet from shore and swimming hard toward a small island.
