After several years of free bus rides, the transit operator in Kansas City, Mo., is asking riders to open their wallets.
The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) is now requiring riders to pay for the city’s bus service — reinstating fares following a six-year period of free rides, with the aim of funding more reliable service and other upgrades.
The agency, which offers transportation including the bi-state RideKC bus service, reintroduced fares on June 1, building in a “grace period” that essentially postponed enforcement of the new policy through Sunday.
