Max capacity for dogs at Caddo Animal Service and Mosquito Control, according to assistant director Kelvin Samuel, is “probably 160 for kennels,” but recently they’ve been above that number.
The shelter at 1500 Monty St. in Shreveport is currently holding 179 dogs and puppies, numbers that are high despite a “very successful” national adoption event in August.
There is the physical space to double-up dogs in kennels if necessary, but that is a last resort. Multiple dogs housed in kennels increase the chance that there will be outbreaks of disease, like the highly contagious parvovirus that can be deadly to puppies and young dogs…
