ST. LOUIS – A jury deemed a St. Louis man not guilty Wednesday for a fatal shooting last year in north St. Louis.
Turley Smith, 32, was found not guilty for the murder of Percy Bowman, 44, after a three-day trial. However, the jury did convict Smith of illegally possessing a gun.
According to the 22nd Judicial Court, Bowman didn’t recognize Smith when he showed up in the 4200 block of Peck St. near Fairground Park on March 15, 2025. Officials say Bowman repeatedly asked why he was there.

During the trial, Smith told the court that he feared for his life and shot at Bowman in self-defense after Bowman grabbed a pistol from his pants and racked the slide.
