JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson police responded to a recent rise in violent crime by focusing on prevention efforts and stronger community partnerships, according to Jackson Police Chief Dr. RaShall Brackney.
Brackney said the city has seen 11 homicides since April 1, 2026.

“The sad part about it, the five of the last seven or so cases are intimate personal violence or domestic violence,” she said. “People knew each other and were involved in them. In these family conflicts, they are turning to weapons, more specifically either handguns or long rifles, to settle disputes.”
Brackney said the department is partnering with the Hinds County District Attorney’s Office to create a homicide review team that will study cases and look for warning signs that could help prevent violence before it escalates…
